These would-be-Chihuahuas were called 'Techichies' and tribesmen considered them to be sacred dogs, which guarded humans from sins and evil forces. Archaeologists have found skeletons of these dogs in ancient Aztecs' and Toltecs' graves, who thus sacrificed the animals in order to secure the soul of the dead person against evil spirits.

There are also ancient stones with engravings of the dogs, which bear resemblance to modern-day Chihuahuas. The Monastery of Huejotzingo, located near the highway from Mexico City to Puebla, and built in 1530 had ancient stones used as bricks containing images of the dog.

Although there is little doubt about the relation of modern Chihuahuas to these dogs, there are still questions about this species, which added to the genetic pool of the modern dog. Some people believe that these dogs arrived in Mexico with Spanish Conquistadors, and others think that immigrants from Middle East and Asia brought them in from China and Egypt.

With the acceptance of the breed standard in 1904, the Chihuahua became very popular in different regions of the world. Chihuahuas are one of the smallest breeds of dogs in the world. Breeders breed Chihuahuas for home life as toy-dogs.
