Chihuahuas can be smooth-coated and long-coated. The coat’s texture can be different – either silky and gentle or slightly rough and whiskery. These dogs can come in a wide variety of colors, and the breed standard is not strict on color permutations. However, merle Chihuahuas have been excluded from the show ring, since the gene responsible for this color is also responsible for increased occurrence of deafness, blindness and other serious genetic abnormalities. If you wont to acquire a healthy and purebred Chihuahua, please, buy only from reputable and legitimate Chihuahua breeders. Do not let irresponsible and dollar-oriented breeders, who often claim to have “exclusive Baby Teacup Chihuahuas” twist round your little finger!
Chihuahuas can be prone to a number of genetic disorders. They often suffer from seizures and epilepsy. Like many small-sized breeds, they are susceptible to hydrocephalus – a very painful disease, which is observable through an increased size of the head. Chihuahua puppies have “moleras” – soft spots on the skull, where bones do not grow together to cover the brain. Therefore, even a seemingly slight head injury can be fatal for this dog. If you purchase a puppy from a reputable and conscientious breeder, you will run a minimal risk of buying a dog with genetic disorders. No true breeder will ever offer any “Baby Teacup Chihuahua”, since such terms sound downright dabble and non-professional and therefore grate on the ears of all experienced and devoted Chihuahua breeders.
